On Tuesday, September 10, students, faculty, staff, and trustees of The St. Paul's Schools gathered in the George L. Mitchell '44 Stadium for the installation of Dr. Jefferson Huang as the schools' inaugural president.
This ceremony marked a historic moment for our institutions. With oversight of our three schools, Dr. Huang is positioned to ensure that St. Paul's students of all ages continue to learn in a small-school setting while enjoying the opportunities provided by a large, interconnected campus. Working with the heads to make sure each school retains its own distinctive culture and gender-appropriate programs, Dr. Huang will streamline the schools' administrative functions, serve as an external ambassador, and guide the faculty and staff to continually elevate the quality and continuity of instruction on our campus.
"Today we're celebrating that each one of the schools is part of an even larger collection of schools. And that collection of schools is stronger together than any one is alone," Dr. Huang said to the gathered crowd of 1,600 St. Paul's community members and invited guests.
Prior to joining St. Paul's, Dr. Huang was Vice President at Claremont McKenna College, where he served for 24 years in roles of increasing responsibility centered around Student Affairs and Admissions. Early in his career, he was associate dean of students at Bard College in New York. Dr. Huang is a scholar of Philosophy who has taught many courses and researches and writes on ethics and technology among other issues. He completed his Ph.D in Philosophy at The Claremont Graduate University, as well as a B.A. and M.A. of Philosophy at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.
Jeff and his wife, Catie Huang, have two children: Abby and Topher. When his children attended Saint Mark's Episcopal School in Upland, California, Jeff served as chair of the school's board.
In her opening remarks at the installation ceremony, Elizabeth Robinson, chair of the Board of Trustees, captured the energy and enthusiasm around Dr. Huang's appointment. "When you look to your left, and look to your right, know that you are witnessing a historic moment for our community," she said. "We leave here carrying pride in our history ... and energy fueled by all that is possible for us in the bright future we see ahead."
